March 7-11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week:
Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts quickly, or when dams or levees break. Damaging flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. Floods can occur within minutes or over a long period, and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.
Flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with incredible speed. Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it. They also occur when water fills normally dry creeks or streams or enough water accumulates for streams to overtop their banks, causing rapid rises of water in a short amount of time. They can happen within minutes of the causative rainfall, limiting the time available to warn and protect the public.

KARLA BAUER returns to her hometown to perform with Lyons High students
The SHINE On! Outreach Community Concert will be held at the Lyons High School auditorium on April 2, 2022 from 7-8pm. The following day, April 3rd 2022, First Baptist Church will host Bauer and her jazz ensemble for a concert from 10-11am. Both events are free to the public.
Bauer grew up in Lyons and is returning to the Lyons High School auditorium where she sang in public for the very first time at the age of twelve for a local talent contest. She will return to this same stage to perform songs from her fifth studio album, “My King is Coming.”
The Lyons sixth graders and Lionaires will be performing on stage some swinging tunes with Bauer and her Kansas City jazz quartet for a grand concert finale.

The 1960 A-B State Champion Lyons High School Boys Tennis Team will be inducted into the Lyons Schools Hall of Fame on April 7. The team will be recognized at 12:30, prior to the start of the home tennis tournament at the LHS tennis courts.
The team included Roger Caldwell, Bill Palmer, Wayne Fraser, John Jones, Nathan Granger, and Byron Welch. Several members plan to be in attendance. The team was coached by Art Baldwin.
After a short ceremony at the tennis courts, guests will be invited to join the team in the LHS main hallway for the Hall of Fame unveiling and then in the cafeteria for a reception.
The Hall of Fame, sponsored by the USD 405 Education Endowment Association, is a 75” interactive touchscreen display with photos and biographical information on inductees. The Hall of Fame can also be viewed online at https://lyons.touchpros.com/Home9.aspx.

March 7-11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week. Tornado season usually refers to the time of year the U.S. sees the most tornadoes. The peak “tornado season” for the southern Plains including Kansas is from May into early June. But, remember, tornadoes can happen at any time of year. Tornadoes can also happen at any time of day or night, but most tornadoes occur between 4–9 p.m.

March 7-11 is Weather Awareness Week.
Many hazardous weather events are associated with THUNDERSTORMS. Under the right conditions, rainfall from thunderstorms causes flash flooding, killing more people each year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning. Lightning is responsible for many fires around the world each year, and causes fatalities. Hail up to the size of softballs damages cars and windows, and kills livestock caught out in the open. Strong (up to more than 120 mph) straight-line winds associated with thunderstorms knock down trees, power lines and mobile homes. Tornadoes (with winds up to about 300 mph) can destroy all but the best-built man-made structures.

The Lyons High School 1979 Boys Track & Field Team will be inducted into the Lyons Schools Hall of Fame at a ceremony to be held in conjunction with the Lyons Invitational Track Meet on April 8, 2022
Members of the team include: Mark Fisher, Don McKinnis, Don Campbell, Donny Wilson, Darryl Thornton, Mark Hundley, Kent Teeter, Doug Siemens, Ernie Wilson, Mike Rogers, Pam Maxwell, Bev Teeter, Sonny Hunter, Darin Dressel, Steve Moss, Pat Kottas, Jerry Durham, Andy Parrish, Coach Don Smith, Coach John New, Coach Garrett Wheaton (dec), Julie Monroe, Todd McGlynn, Kirk Kahler, Mike McQuilliam, Bobby Howard, Terry Brewster, David Hundley, Jon Wilson, Mark McKenna, Craig Thornburg, and Chris Michaelis.
To participate in the induction ceremony, members of the team (including coaches and managers) should contact:
HOF@usd405.com
Team members who have already made contact with the Hall of Fame, need not do so again.
