The Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) survey is given annually to students in 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades during November, December, or January. It measures student responses to questions related to risk factors and protective factors. The survey is voluntary and a student must have a parent's permission before taking the survey. Students in USD 405 do not answer questions on the modules for sexual orientation or gender identity. Results from the survey are received only in aggregate format and not by individual students. The results are reviewed to identify trends among our students for both positive and negative influences. That information is used to help guide school improvement efforts towards the needs of the students. Paste this link into your browser to see the KCTC survey questions. https://kctcdata.org/families/view-the-survey/

Kansas High School Graduation Task Force Input We need your feedback. At the June 2021 Kansas State Board of Education meeting, Commissioner of Education Randy Watson announced the establishment of a Graduation Requirements Task Force, which include members of the State Board of Education, business leaders, curriculum directors, high school principals, counselors, teachers, KSHSAA, local boards of education and superintendents, charged with examining graduation requirements in Kansas from at least three different lenses: Additional courses or deletion of courses required for graduation (if any). Examination of competencies and multiple ways to show mastery of skills which allow students to move at their own pace and time. Examination of any additional requirements in addition to the high school diploma (value-added assets such as industry recognized certificate, college credits, etc.) Today, we’re asking for your feedback to help guide the work of this group. Please use the QR code provided below and included in the attached document to complete a short survey regarding your thoughts on Kansas’ high school graduation requirements. The deadline to submit feedback is April 15.

March 7-11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week: Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts quickly, or when dams or levees break. Damaging flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. Floods can occur within minutes or over a long period, and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters. Flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with incredible speed. Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it. They also occur when water fills normally dry creeks or streams or enough water accumulates for streams to overtop their banks, causing rapid rises of water in a short amount of time. They can happen within minutes of the causative rainfall, limiting the time available to warn and protect the public.

March 7-11 is Severe Weather Awareness Week. Tornado season usually refers to the time of year the U.S. sees the most tornadoes. The peak “tornado season” for the southern Plains including Kansas is from May into early June. But, remember, tornadoes can happen at any time of year. Tornadoes can also happen at any time of day or night, but most tornadoes occur between 4–9 p.m.

March 7-11 is Weather Awareness Week. Many hazardous weather events are associated with THUNDERSTORMS. Under the right conditions, rainfall from thunderstorms causes flash flooding, killing more people each year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning. Lightning is responsible for many fires around the world each year, and causes fatalities. Hail up to the size of softballs damages cars and windows, and kills livestock caught out in the open. Strong (up to more than 120 mph) straight-line winds associated with thunderstorms knock down trees, power lines and mobile homes. Tornadoes (with winds up to about 300 mph) can destroy all but the best-built man-made structures.

LYONS SCHOOLS USD 405 BOD SOUTH WORKMAN LYONS, KS 67554 Phone: 62D-257-5196 Fax 620-257-5197 www.usd405.com Bil-Daze January 2, 2022 Dear Parents: Together we have made it through nearly two years of the worst pandemic in over 100 years! There have been mumerous challenges and obstacles, and thanks to much hard work by parents, students, and staff, there has been an equal mumber of successes. You were notified before the Christas break that the school district will start the spring semester using the same Safe Reopening Plan adopted by the Board of Education prior to the start of the 2021-2022 school year. That plan has been posted on the school website at https:/bit.}v/3aJNGOn. The Centers for Disease Control and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment have recently adopted new quarantine guidelines. You can review them at https://www.edc.gou/media/releases/2021/g1227-isolation- quarantine-guidance.html. However, the USD 405 Board of Education has not yet had the opportunity to review these new guidelines. Therefore, to begin the spring semester, the Lyons schools will be using the district Safe Reopening Plan noted above. The Board of Education wil review the new CDC/KDHE guidelines at the board meeting on January 10. If quarantine changes are adopted by the Board, you will be notified. As always, thank you for all you do. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call, or email. Sincerely, Bill Day
