There were many wonderful examples of people going above and beyond who were nominated by their peers for the September El Potrillo Above & Beyond recognition. This month, two power couple nominations stood out however -- 1) Steve and Patti Kreis and 2) Ron Herrick and LaNita Heath. Each couple received a $25 gift certificate to El Potrillo.
Steve and Patti Kreis had three nominations for the work they did getting the high school campus cleaned up. One of the nominations said, "Their work in cleaning up the HS campus, football field and tree row on the south side of the football field went above and beyond. These two spent many hours, including Sundays, working on making the HS grounds something we can all be proud of."
Ron Herrick and LaNita Heath had five nominations. One of their nominations said, "They have been working 12+ hour days to make sure everyone at Central is taken care of the last few weeks since we no longer have an evening custodian. They have been kind, persevering, and have done this all while maintaining a wonderful attitude; not one complaint. We are lucky to have them here in Lyons, and they more than deserve this award for all of their hard work in September."
Congratulations also to the following nominees for their awesome contributions during the month of September: Lita Zimmerman, Trisha Stover, Gerard Paz Lostes, Colton Bennett, Kole Clarke, Gaye Callich, Annie Walters, Elsa Brooks, Deanna Granados, Becky Rombeck, Ana Perez, Nick Amezola, Amie Kreis, Shannon Hendricks, and Norma Jaime.

The Central Plains Rodeo Association Finals will be held this weekend in Lyons at the Bar-K-Bar Arena. Park Elementary and Central Elementary were privileged to have the CPRA rodeo queens pay a visit this morning! Lyons students learned about rodeo events, queen competitions and got to play some rodeo-related games.

There are only 3 more school days to complete your first long day of attendance. Enrolling and completing your two long days is what keeps the RCLC funded. After the two long days, one on or before September 20th, and one between the 20th and October 4th, you can work at your own pace .
It is also important that students put in as many hours as possible this week at the RCLC as the total number of hours also impacts our funding.

SCHOOL STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK
School Staff Appreciation Week is an annual event that celebrates the efforts and contributions of teachers and other school employees who inspire and guide students to achieve academic and personal success. It is a time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of educators who tirelessly prepare lessons, grade assignments, provide feedback, and nurture the minds of their students. During this week, schools and communities organize special activities to show gratitude and appreciation to teachers and staff members. From heartfelt thank-you notes and gifts to special events and shows of gratitude, Staff Appreciation Week is an opportunity to recognize the immense value that teachers, aides, paras, secretaries, custodians, cooks, bus drivers, coaches, nurses, itinerants, and administrators add to our communities. It is a time to say "thank you" and show our love and appreciation for all they do for us and our future.
School nurses are essential members of our education community, providing critical care for students' health and well-being during their school day. They offer a range of services, from administering medications and vaccinations, to assisting with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, to providing mental health resources and support. This week, we celebrate and honor the dedication, knowledge, and expertise of school nurses nationwide. They play an invaluable role in ensuring that our students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Thank you to USD 405 school nurse Brandi Reazin and to Rice County Special Services Cooperative nurse Amy Pieplow for your tireless efforts and commitment to our students' health.
Thank you to Lyons High School Principal Darrin Ashmore, Lyons Middle School Principal Derek Carlson, Central Elementary Principal Terri Glass, Park Elementary Principal Kristin Borrowman, and LHS Assistant Principal Jeff Fuss. It would be impossible to list all the various responsibilities and duties that you are able to balance on a daily basis. FREE FLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN 8-17!!!
This Saturday, April 29, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., the Young Eagles program will give free airplane flights to youth from ages 8-17 at the Lyons Airport.
Launched in 1992, the Young Eagles program has dedicated 30 years to giving youth ages 8–17 their first free ride in an airplane.
It’s the only program of its kind, with the sole mission to introduce and inspire kids in the world of aviation.
Today, over 2.3 million young people have enjoyed a free introductory flight through the Young Eagles program. These flights are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
Thank you to the awesome Frisbie Education Center office staff: Jessica Goforth - Board Clerk, Sydney Kollhoff - Payroll/HR, Cheryl Davis - Deputy Board Clerk/Business Manager, and Dona Strubhar - Accounts Payable. These four office professionals manage the accounting, audits, reporting, bookkeeping, etc. for two school districts (405 & RCSSC), a $26 million budget, 800 students, and over 200 employees. They are dedicated and hard-working and help make everyone else's job easier.
All Lyons schools will start two hours late on Monday, October 17th due to unanticipated construction issues.

False rumors this morning--
There was a rumor of a threat of school violence this morning that was thoroughly investigated by school officials and local police, however no evidence was discovered except for hearsay and rumors. Be assured our students and staff are entirely safe this morning. In the event of an actual emergency, parents, staff, and the public will be notified through proper channels.

At the June 2021 Kansas State Board of Education meeting, Commissioner of Education Randy Watson announced the establishment of a Graduation Requirements Task Force, which include members of the State Board of Education, business leaders, curriculum directors, high school principals, counselors, teachers, KSHSAA, local boards of education and superintendents, charged with examining graduation requirements in Kansas from at least three different lenses:
Additional courses or deletion of courses required for graduation (if any).
Examination of competencies and multiple ways to show mastery of skills which allow students to move at their own pace and time.
Examination of any additional requirements in addition to the high school diploma (value-added assets such as industry recognized certificate, college credits, etc.)
