Students at Reallity U

Community SHOUT OUT! Travel back in the semester to March 31. This was a day that Lyons Middle School Hosted Reality U for the third year.

Lyons Federal Bank has generously donated $500 dollars the past two years to help cover some of the costs of this event. THANK YOU Lyons Federal for always supporting our student projects. This one is especially important in sharing financial literacy.

This year had to look a little different with Covid restrictions. This year our SENIOR Class stepped up to the plate and filled the seats of what is normally our community volunteers from area business and organizations. Due to social distancing, it was recommended that we not intermingle germs any more than necessary.

We ran four sessions for our 8th grade and 10th grade students to experience the Reality U simulation. Reality U brings a bit of “reality” to students through a personal finance simulation. Students imagine their life as a 26-year-old. They complete an online lifestyle survey based on their answers and GPA that creates a unique and individualized future scenario. Each scenario includes the student’s monthly income, credit card debt, student loan information, as well as marital and family status. They go to 12 booths and make financial decisions based on what they can afford. Their checkbook register can’t fall below a zero balance.

Thanks again to Lyons Federal Bank and the 2021 Senior Class!
