Q: What is SmartMusic?
A: SmartMusic is a web-based interactive program that enhances the way students practice.

Q: How will this help my child practice?
A: Since I can't be there with them while they practice at home, SmartMusic provides guidance to help them practice more effectively.

  • This software gives students access to pieces of music I upload and assign to them on a home computer or tablet with a microphone.
  • Then instead of practicing alone, students click the "start" button and play along. Some pieces have a background accompaniment, which allows students to actually hear how their part fits within the whole while they are practicing.
  • When students are playing a piece that appears on-screen, they get instant feedback. The program detects the pitches and rhythms being played, and the notes show up green or red, telling them which notes they got right or wrong.
  • Students can change the tempo to slow down a piece at first and then gradually increase their speed as their skill grows.
  • Finally, SmartMusic makes submitting and grading playing tests much more efficient. Students will know what notes and rhythms they've missed before submitting, and the program automatically grades those elements. This maximizes our time spent in class, which is better spent rehearsing rather than having students do playing tests one by one.

Additionally, many practice tools are included in SmartMusic:

  • There is a built-in tuner to help with pitch.
  • A built-in metronome helps students learn how to play rhythms accurately.
  • The built-in record feature provides immediate feedback. Students can learn a lot by listening to recordings of themselves.

6th Grade

6th-grade students will have access to their entire Essential Elements method book on SmartMusic and will be able to practice and submit exercises with no limitations.

Device Requirements

  • Windows/Mac Computer with a USB or 3.5mm microphone (microphones can be purchased for very cheap prices on Amazon) OR
  • Windows/Mac Laptop with a built-in microphone OR
  • Tablet or Chromebook with a built-in microphone. iPad users MUST download the New SmartMusic App on iTunes

Smartphones or other devices with small screens will NOT work.

Trouble and Errors

Sometimes students may find that the program is picky with what it hears as correct or incorrect notes. Other times, they may experience glitches. Causes of this could be the following:

  • Bad internet connection (consider just sending me a recording)
  • Having too many programs open besides SmartMusic.
  • Bad tone or a "flubbed" note
  • Playing notes too short.
  • Playing out of tune (use the tuner tool under "Assessment")
  • Outside noises interfering (use headphone/earbuds to listen to your part and while you record.

If a student feels they have done their best work and the program has incorrectly marked notes wrong, they can write a note when submitting the test to let me know, and I can check their work and manually adjust their grade.

Percussion

SmartMusic can be used for mallet tests. However, the program does not play nice with drums. All non-mallet percussion playing tests must be recorded and emailed to Mr. Scherer or completed before or after school. Bell kits and practice pads are available for students to check out.
