               An Overview of LMS Eighth Grade American History

     Since history is known to repeat itself, it is important to have a clear understanding of the past in order to be successful in the future. As eighth graders, there is much future ahead. Through the use of simulations and other hands-on experiences, I hope I can make the class enjoyable as well as educational. American History is year long class and fulfills one of the three social studies credits at Lyons Middle School. These requirements are described in the student handbook along with USD 405 Student Academic Expectations.

     All students are expected to maintain at least a cumulative 70% average in all course work. When necessary, students will receive additional learning time before or after school to meet academic requirements. Each teacher has the discretion to decide when late work deadlines occur. For this class, assigned work will be due on the date designated in class. Any work not turned in at that time, with the exception of illness, will be considered late. Ten percent will be deducted from the score received and anything over one week late will have a penalty of -30%. The grading scale at Lyons Middle School is as follows:

     A = 100 – 90

     B = 89 – 80

     C = 79 – 70

     69 – 0 in progress or failing

Students are expected to be in their seat with all their materials when class begins. Tardy policies are discussed in the student handbook. Other expectations include respect for themselves and others, be an active participant in class, come prepared to learn and with any previously assigned work. Students will need to have a two-pocket folder, which will be provided. Other necessary materials, including a writing utensil, paper to write on, any homework or classroom papers we are working with at the time, must be provided by the student.

     One of our goals at Lyons Middle School is to have successful students. Success means different things to different people but one fact is clear: Attitude is the most important factor in your success. Our attitude determines the amount of energy we put into our work. “The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work. Hard word is the price we must all pay for success.”* We have high expectations of students and confidence that students will perform up to the expectations.
