LYONS HIGH CROSS COUNTRY ADDING A HELPING HAND
by Larry Dumler
Each season I try to find a community service project the team can do. These projects seem to bring out the very best of all the kids. I ask the team if they wanted to do this and they all agreed it would be a good idea. We chose Linda Sunley’s yard to clean it up. She was a tremendous supported for LHS athletics and her son Chad ran for me several years back. I tell the kids this not only builds team unity outside practice but it teaches them they can give back to people of the community. They got out of bed and were there by 9:30 Saturday and worked like beavers to get the job done. We ended up with a huge trailer full of limbs, a trash can half full of small pieces of siding from her old garage, and my pickup bed half full of dried leaves. We not only did a bunch of work but had a great time doing it. These guys can make a “game” out of just about anything. That always makes it fun and interesting. About half the team participated. They other half had previous commitments and could not help and the is OK. They really wanted to be there. I tip my hat to all these kids, they a great.
