Hands On Learning
By Tiffany Zink
On April 8th Dr. Matt Schlotterback visited each fifth grade class to help them with a hands-on approach to learning about the circulatory and respiratory systems. Each class had studied the systems and this was a chance to see the real organs close up. Pig organs are the best resemblance in size and shape to a human. Armed with surgical gloves the students got to feel the heart, lungs, trachea, liver and gallbladder. Dr. Schlotterback then demonstrated
how the lungs fill with air and how the vocal cords work to make sound as air passes through them. Students held the heart in their hands while sticking their fingers through the valves in the heart. They also got to see how the left side of the heart has thicker muscle then the right side. The fifth grade teachers appreciate Dr. Schlotterback spending time helping the kids examine the systems they had studied in class.
