AFJROTC Take Wingnuts by Storm
by Master Sgt. Matthew Gilreath, AFJROTC Instructor
The Lyons
High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
presented the colors at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita Aug. 28
and Aug. 30.
The all female color guard was greeted by fans and players as they
took the field to represent themselves, their team, their school
and their country August 28.
“I was so nervous before the game, but once we got on the field…I
was so proud to be there,” said Abigail Hoover, freshman cadet.
The team, consisting of two freshmen had been practicing before and
after school to make sure their timing was prefect.
“We put in a lot of work,” said Alex Quiroz, freshman cadet. “The
girl’s and the guy’s team practiced together. We had a lot to learn
and not much time to learn it so that’s why we had so many
practices. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. The
best part was marching out on the field. I can’t tell you what an
awesome feeling it is, you just have to do it.”
The all male color guard was equally up to the task on August
30.
“This was our first event of the school year so we wanted to make
sure we got it right, said Raymon Jeffery junior cadet. “All of us
worked together to make this happen.”
“This was also the first time we had an all male color guard for an
event like this and I was honored to carry our country’s flag,”
said Brandon Wilder, senior cadet. “Like our instructors told us,
work equals fun. We put in the work, so we got to come here and
have some fun. I can’t wait until the next event.”
The AFJROTC will be providing color guard details for various
events throughout the school year and will provide a special
opening for the Lyons Football Team home opener September 11.
