LHS Reading is FAME - Mastery

Reading is FAME was developed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. It is a reading program that helps adolescent readers gain up to two years growth in their reading abilities. Students’ vocabulary, fluency and comprehension skills increase so that they can succeed in the other classes they are taking. It also helps to build confidence in the students so they are willing to try the reading that is required in the other classes.
FAME is divided into four programs F-Foundations, A-Adventures, M-Mastery, and E-Explorations. At the high school students are enrolled in Mastery and Explorations. These programs work on on advanced vocabulary skills, comprehension, and research skills.
In Mastery students learn 10 vocabulary words per week. These words are learned through direction instruction, word activities, games and short expository readings. Word activities are completed every day in class. The activities start out easy and get harder throughout the week. Discussion of the word activities takes place in class after the activity is done.
The games are the more exciting part of the class. Students play Scattagories, Jeopardy, Outburst, Taboo, the Conversation Game, and $10,000 Pyramid. Students look forward to these games and competition helps motivate students to learn the vocabulary better.
Explorations is the research part of FAME. Students work from the Explorations Board. They draw several topics per week and do research on them and then write about that topic. By the time Explorations is over the student should be able to win most Trivial Pursuit games.
