LMS Reading is FAME
by Debbie Dumler
Reading is FAME was developed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. It is a reading program that helps adolescent readers gain up to two years growth in their reading abilities. Students’ vocabulary, fluency and comprehension skills increase so that they can succeed in the other classes they are taking. It also helps to build confidence in the students so they are willing to try the reading that is required in the other classes.
FAME students learn through a variety of activities. One of these activities are computer games. Each day students play a different computer game. They keep track of their scores and try to improve the time and score with each round. The games reinforce the vocabulary words for the week so students have many opportunities to work with these words.
FAME classroom games
A second way students work with the vocabulary words is through classroom games. Students can play Password which reinforces synonym and definitions for the vocabulary words. They also play “Who Needs to Know” where they try to think of occupations that would need to know the vocabulary word. Finally they play Jeopardy in which they need to think of synonyms for the vocabulary word, spell the vocabulary word, think of an occupation for the vocabulary word and use the vocabulary word in a sentence. Students are rewarded for winning at a game.
Each week students take a pre-test on the vocabulary words. This lets them know what words they need to study the most. At the end of the week students take a post-test and we compare the results with the score from the beginning of the week. Students can expect to see a 40% to 50% improvement in their scores.
