Central Elementary: Character Education

Compassion

November 2008

Our Character Education word for November was Compassion. Our Assembly featured Jo Dean Murphy Hearn from Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter in Kansas City, her dog Daisy and Tina Schlotterback, president of Friends of Animals of Rice County. Hearn taught for 20 years and now works for the shelter. Being a humane educator, she teaches adults and children on the importance of compassion for animals. Schlotterback is a volunteer in training for Wayside Waifs. They showed a movie teaching pet care and spoke on caring for animals. Daisy did tricks for the students.

Board member, Curtis Tobias joined students for the classroom activity 'Sorry Sucker.' In this activity small groups for students were asked to transfer  a ping pong ball on the end of a plastic tube from one student to the next. The force of suction was used to past the ball. They were to show compassion by using kind words of encouragement.

Thanks to Mrs. Bush and Miss Combs for the bulletin board.
