September 07, 2007

What is a Whiteboard?

A whiteboard is large square piece of white tile board used to foster student collaborative learning during group and class discussions.   Student write information on whiteboards with dry erase markers then display / present their "board" to the rest of the class for discussion.

Why Whiteboard?

Whiteboarding

  • Provides a venue for student discussion of ideas and misconceptions
  • Increases class participation
  • Promotes collaboration among students
  • Provides alternative representations of problems and possible solutions
  • Assists student to make a personal connection to concepts
  • Facilitates critical thinking

What is the Whiteboard of the Month?

Whiteboards with insightful and creative representations of concepts are selected as examples to be displayed on the "Whiteboard Wall of Fame"  in room 132.  Each month, one board is selected and displayed with a short description on the LHS website below.

December
Physics students diagram the forces acting on a motionless crate when pushed at a downward angle.  Using the diagram, they write an equation for the sum of the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the crate.

November
Chemistry students use a bar graph to illustrate the energy transferred to a piece of iron as it is heated and then demonstrate how to determine the change in temperature of the iron during heating.

September
Two freshman in Foundations of Physics class demonstrate how to determine the slope and y-intercept of a line from a graph.  Once the slope and y-intercept are known, the students write an equation to predict the time it would take to completely fill the gas tank.
